Overview
Purpose: This guide explains what Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is, why it’s important, and how it affects your login experience at SD35.
Audience: All SD35 staff and students required to use MFA for secure access to district services.
Estimated time to complete: 5–10 minutes
What is Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)?
MFA adds an extra layer of security to your sign-ins by requiring two or more forms of verification:
- Something you know: Your SD35 email and password
- Something you have: A code or notification from an authenticator app or security key
This layered defense helps prevent unauthorized access, even if your password is compromised.
Who Needs MFA?
MFA is mandatory for all SD35 staff and students accessing district systems.
Recommended Setup
We recommend registering at least two MFA methods to ensure access if one becomes unavailable. For example:
Supported MFA Apps
SD35 supports the Microsoft Authenticator app, but you may also use alternatives like Google Authenticator or Duo.
How MFA Affects You
- You will still use your SD35 email and password to sign in.
- MFA may prompt you to enter a 6-digit code, approve a notification, or use a security key.
- Prompts typically occur once per day or when signing in from a new device or location.
Stay Signed In
The “Stay signed in?” option keeps your session active for up to 14 days. Only use this on personal devices.

Troubleshooting
- Browser not remembering login? Check if cookies are cleared, incognito mode is used, or a different browser/device is in use.
- Lost, stolen, or broken device? Contact the IT Service Desk immediately to request a Temporary Access Pass and reset your MFA methods.
- New phone? Use cloud backup to restore your MFA settings. If unavailable, contact IT for assistance.
Security Considerations
- SD35 does not support SMS or phone call MFA due to security risks like SIM swapping and social engineering.
- Authenticator apps and security keys are more secure and reliable.
Alternative to Mobile Devices
If you prefer not to use a mobile device, you can use a security key (similar to a USB stick) that does not require a phone or internet connection.

Conclusion
MFA is a critical part of protecting your SD35 account. Set up at least two methods, and contact IT if you need help managing your MFA settings or recovering access.
